Residents, business owners, and other stakeholders are invited to attend a public meeting at the New Paltz Village Hall on Weds., Nov. 30, to learn about the New Paltz Community Energy initiative.
Since mid-2015 the Town and Village of New Paltz have been collaborating with several other organizations* to plan a community energy project that will serve several objectives for residents, businesses, and organizations in New Paltz. The project involves a few elements, including:
Each of these initiatives is expected to reduce energy costs and produce other benefits, with greater savings and benefits achievable as more customers participate. The microgrid, for example, will enable participating businesses and organizations to keep their doors open during a utility outage. Also it is expected to reduce their annual energy costs, and to increase their use of solar energy.
In the New Paltz Microgrid Stage 1 study, the project team selected for consideration numerous facilities that provide a vital community service and are located within a zone that is feasible for microgrid development. Resilient energy service for these facilities will allow New Paltz residents to access the important goods and services they offer, and will enable them to safely shelter in their homes during long-duration utility outages – such as those experienced in our area during Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene, and the Halloween Nor’easter of 2011.
Active participation is required of businesses, organizations, and residents to be served by the proposed microgrid. Participants will gain the opportunity to understand the project, review all plans and agreements, ask questions, provide input, and ultimately to decide whether to opt in and include their facilities in the project.
This is a collaborative initiative; as more customers participate, the potential for cost savings and other benefits will increase.
To provide information about the initiative and engage prospective participants, the NPCE team will host a public meeting on Weds., Nov. 30, at 1:00 p.m. in the Village Hall (2nd floor). During this meeting, team leaders will provide a presentation and will address questions.
Attending this meeting does not represent any obligation or commitment on the part of attendees, but it will enable them to understand the project and what it means for their operations and objectives. To attend this public meeting, please RSVP here.
* The New Paltz Community Energy team includes the Town and Village of New Paltz, New Paltz Central School District, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 3 HQ, Woodland Pond at New Paltz, Microgrid Institute, and Institute for Building Technology & Safety.
